Hand Pumps

If you want a traditional hand pump for your well then please be aware you cannot usually attach a hose pipe to them and they will only be good for filling buckets and water cans. However if this is what you wish then we can supply and install them in all shapes and sizes. If you already have one that is not pulling or lifting water then it may need restoring which is something we can also offer. Please visit our well hand pump restoration page. Over time the leather seals and gaskets become weak and no longer lift the water.

If you have a working hand pump and find you just cannot lift enough water then there is an alternative to having to pump the water by hand. You can now have the traditional old vintage hand pump look with the 21st century electric pump connected to the end of it. This will allow you to pump much more volume without the hassle of getting a dead arm by pumping like crazy.

Well Hand Pump Restorations

Well hand water pumps have usually laid forgotten about or left as a garden ornament for many many years. We can restore your old vintage well hand water pump back to its original working condition.

We have successfully restored many hand pumps including village pumps. Small hand pumps to large donkey driven well water pumps, there is not much we have not seen or restored.

The restoration of a hand water pump will be specified based on what you are looking to get out of it. Some people like the pump to look like it has been stood for many years, Others like them to look brand new. We will strip the pump down, if required hand it sand blasted or vapour blasted depending on its condition and material to bring it back to new and stop anymore corrosion. We can spray the pump, powder coat it, hand paint it or leave it as it is with maybe a coat of anti corrosion paint. The options really are limitless.

Parts missing? If you have parts missing our specialist Iron workers can recreate original and replacement parts to ensure we get the pump working again. If we do not have original replacement parts already in stock we make, design or recreate the parts.

Gaskets dried out? One of the most fundamental parts of the hand pumps is the leather gaskets. We use original leather gaskets which are made by us, by hand for your pump. You cannot buy gaskets for old vintage hand pumps off the shelf so we make them to order for you. We use different thicknesses and types just to make sure you have the correct gasket to seal the pump. with a bad gasket the pump will leak and not create a vacuum so will not work or work very poorly.

No vacuum? No water coming out the pump? There is lead weights made to your specific well and well depth including water depth. We make new weights from lead in traditional ways to ensure the pump is original and working perfectly.

Brass bolts were used on the pump itself and if you use stainless or just steel bolts these will corrode and react with the brass deteriorating the pump which cannot be repaired easily. We can supply these brass bolts but they are becoming rare, if you have some of these bolts please get in touch with us as we are always looking for them to ensure the pumps are complete and original using original materials.

Pump for sale? If you have an old vintage hand water pump which you are thinking of chucking or taking to the scrap man please contact us before going down that route. We will buy your old pump or have it collected from you at no cost. They are becoming very rare and unfortunately not many people care. If we do not preserve these pumps they will be part of our forgotten history which were taken to the scrap yard because they were made of precious metals. The precious material is not a refection of just how precise and well made the pumps were using the material which is what we need to try and keep from being forgotten. Please get in contact if you have an old pump which you no longer require.

If you are wanting a hand pump but you do not want to work hard to get the water from your well then we can add an electric pump which as soon as you start to move the pump handle will turn on and give you your water straight from your old hand water pump.

On-Off Water Pumps

These types of well pumps can deliver a little or a lot in term of litres per minute and that will mainly depend on what you wish to use the water for. The term on-off is giving because you physically need to turn a switch on to turn the pump on and vice versus with turning it off. These are cheaper then a constant pressure pump however are not very convenient. They cannot pump against a dead end (closed tap for example) as this will burn the pump out. You will need to have the tap open and whatever is at the end of the hosepipe open also before turning the pump on.

These types of well water pumps can be used if you want to have a large irrigation system or if you want to supply a house with the water. They can then be controlled with a pressure vessel and pressure switch which will turn the pump on and off at certain pressures so not to damage the pump. There is additional costs to this which may make you look at a constant pressure pump system.

Constant Pressure Pumps

Constant Pressure water pumps are the very latest in pump technology and bring pumps in line with the 21st century. They have all sorts of sensors built into them. Now you may think this is bad news, we thought the same (more sensors means more to go wrong) but considering we have installed way more then 300 of these types of water pumps in the last 7 years and only had a problem with one of them that is testament to how rugged these really are. They are simply an on-off pump with a few sensors built in for its protection. All of these sensors are available for the on-off pumps but as additions, are expensive and cumbersome items which attach externally.

The pump is installed at the bottom of your well and once connected to the electric does a few checks before turning on. Once it is turned on it will pressurize the system and once it is up to the required pressure will automatically turn off. When you open a tap as you would normally the pump senses the pressure change and turns on. Close the tap the pump senses the pressure going up and turns off. If the water in your well drops and the pump is exposed the pumps have built in dry run protection which will check to see if it is under the water. If it is not then the pump will turn off and try again in 15 minutes. If still not it will try again in 30 minutes and that doubles until water is returned and the pump then knows it is safe to turn back on. The pumps also have motor protection built in and if it gets too hot or starts to pull too many volts and amps the pump will turn off automatically. This type of pump is the best to use if you want the simplicity of using your well water as you would normal mains water, if you have a large irrigation system or require a good pressure over a long distance, they are also perfect for whole house systems which are the most common application to using your well.

These pumps are good value for money, last many years and require little or no maintenance. What you get is an entire pump system built in to a small pump.

Booster pumps

– 21st century type

If you have a system in place which usually pumps to a tank or you find the pressure is very low then a booster water pump is needed to boost the pressure and flow rate around the system. These booster pumps are fitted in-line to your system and pump the water up to a set pressure.

– Original well type

These are old pumps which sit on oak beams within your well, they contain lead weights and leather seals which can wear and require replacement. We can ensure these are replaced and the well booster pump is working perfectly.
